Like many people emerging from the pandemic anew, Mozilla’s Firefox web browser is now sporting a fresh look and feel.
Reimagined to be “fast, modern, and inviting the first time you run it and every day after,” Firefox version 89 promises a modern, streamlined aesthetic backed by an advanced web experience.
“We’re living in a frenetic time, where people are dealing with tough changes in our daily lives and hard-to-solve problems are popping up everywhere,” Selena Deckelmann, senior manager of security engineering at Mozilla, wrote in a blog post. “We think the browser should be a piece of software you can rely on to have your back, pleasant to look at, and working seamlessly with the web.”
With that in mind, this week’s mobile and desktop releases offer features like simplified navigation (just type the URL and press enter), clutter-free menus (look for the hamburger or right-click buttons), a new tab design (now with added visual indicators and detachable windows), and quieter notifications (consolidated panels make it easy to respond and dismiss).
Mozilla also introduced a revamped version of Firefox for iOS, including a “modernized, optimized, and differentiated” user interface. iPhone and iPad users can expect an auto-appearing keyboard when searching, improved navigation, and better discoverability, as well as refreshed iconography and menu item names for added consistency across desktop and mobile platforms.
“As you can see for the past couple of months we’ve obsessed over everything from the icons you click to the address bar to the navigation buttons and menus you use,” according to the blog. The remodel doesn’t end there, though. Mozilla also announced next-level privacy with the introduction of Total Cookie Protection for Private Browsing mode.
“We’re excited to share this new Firefox experience across your devices,” Deckelmann said. “We’re planning exciting new features to roll out this year that will build on the modern web redesign this new Firefox delivers. No matter what device you choose to tackle the web in the future, Firefox will be there for you.”
